Noel is alright. He's been better, but he's been worse, too. He munches on a grapefruit as he walks along Route 121, juice running down the inside of his wrist. It's bitter in just the way he likes. He reaches down to offer Mona a slice, but the Skitty shies away from the smell of citrus peel. " So picky," he says lightly as he forges on, careful not to trip over Mona as she weaves between his legs. It's a bright, beautiful morning, though a chilly one. Flocks of Wingull wheel overhead, crisp against the glare of the sun. Noel veers toward the shoreline and crouches, rinsing his sticky hand in the shallows. He thinks nothing of it until he looks up, right in the direction of the docks and the ocean beyond it. It shouldn't be a big deal. Noel has a view of the ocean from his bedroom window back home, and even since his sister disappeared it hasn't much affected him. But he doesn't have two floors and miles of land between him and the water now. It's right here, lapping at his shoes, his fingers, his neck, his lungs— It takes Noel longer than it should to realize he isn't drowning. " Are you fucking kidding me," he hisses through gritted teeth, a wave of shame and disgust displacing his initial panic. He rakes his still-wet hand through his hair, dragging the sharp points of his fingernails along his scalp as if the pain will force his body to stop shaking. " What's wrong with me? She isn't even dead." He keeps mumbling to himself in this manner, waiting for his nausea to subside. Mona places her front paws on his thigh. Without words, it's the most she can do for him. TAG: @open NOTES: it's angst-o'clock. this takes place before he joins team magma btw

| "You're getting mighty fat, Breadstick!" Felicity babbled from within the pudgy pink flesh of her Slowpoke companion, who seemed to enjoy the lavish affection with playful squirming movements and placid yawns. "Big! Chunky! Tubby! Round boy!" The imaginative Trainer pretends to buckle under the Pokémon's weight.
Being simple folk from Oldale Town, it was always a rare occurrence for the Quirke family to venture beyond their old-fashioned country settlement. But moments like these were few and far between, and Felicity's mother had made enough money on her own to support a little miniature vacation to Lilycove City!
Young and perpetually curious as she was, Felicity had made some super-duper-ultra-top-secret plans™ to check out the nearby Safari Zone and, just maybe, add a few more Pokémon to her growing band of friends!
"You better make a nice floaty one day!" Felicity teased Breadstick jokingly, moving in to poke and prod at his soft and squishy belly until her peripheral view caught glimpse of another presence some couple of meters away, near the muddy shores.
Is that a person? They have really pretty hair! Felicity was always a child of modest passions, but her safety lessons from school were also a motivating force of interest. The teacher said that it's not safe to play on the water's edge...
As if entirely programmed to act on her own innate altruism, Felicity squeezed down on Breadstick and skipped over to the other person. When the gap between the two shrinks, her eyes glitter with uncontrollable delight at the presence of a Skitty: a little pink cat Pokémon she had desperately wanted since infancy.
Where does she even begin!?
"Omigosh those are a lot of pretty colors!" Breaking the ice was never Felicity's best attribute, and she proved this with her initial outburst. But closer inspection of the scene allowed this normally hyperactive teenager to immediately rescind much of her extroverted energy and try again. "S-Sorry, I should have prob'ly said that a little better... Did something happen?" They say first impressions are the most important. Felicity just hoped she didn't mess it up.
Breadstick just yawned, seemingly unfazed by all the surrounding tension. Slowpokes had that benefit, apparently.

"Omigosh those are a lot of pretty colors!"As if this situation isn't embarrassing enough, a girl—a witness—Noel has never seen before in his life comes charging at him out of nowhere. For a brief moment he thinks she might be addressing someone other than him, but that shred of hope is promptly trampled upon when she stops and stares at his current pathetic, disheveled state. If she wasn't paying attention to him before, she certainly is now. " What," Noel says flatly, glancing around. " Literally what colors." The sea is blue. The sky is blue. His hair is green. His Skitty is pink. These colors are not uncommon and as far as he can see not particularly beautiful. " Did something happen?" Great question! Noel wishes he knew the answer. Just as he can't wrap his head around why the local colors would provoke such an enthusiastic reaction from anyone, he doesn't understand why the sight of the ocean would provoke the (awfully convincing) illusion of drowning. He turns his head in the direction of the water and feels nothing aside from a prickle of discomfort, which is natural considering what happened to him. This is all so stupid. He didn't die that day. His sister didn't die that day. But maybe he came close, and some tiny but insistent part of him remembers. " No. Nothing happened. And you saw nothing too," Noel says instead of the above. By now he has regained enough of his bearings to stand. As he dusts sand from the seat of his pants, Mona pads up to the girl and rubs against her leg, audibly purring. Suck-up, Noel thinks in Mona's general direction, but she gives no indication that she received his telepathy. Noel sighs, turning to the girl. " You're here for Mona, right?" he says, gesturing at the Skitty. " She's friendly, obviously. Pick her up if you want." Maybe Mona will distract the girl from what she saw of him. She doesn't seem to have the highest of attention spans. TAG: Felicity Quirke NOTES: she's so cute oh my god

tag notes thanks! it's probably a disorder, maybe, supposedly, etc., lmao | Like week-old soda that sat at room temperature for too long, a bland and flavorless question was all Felicity received. But, being a simple bumpkin who took joy in everything handed to her, she pressed on undeterred, "All of them, silly Frillish!" The youngster giggled, quickly, without skipping a single beat, "But mostly your hair! It's such a cute green!" Her sincerity would have certainly seemed unrealistic from his angle, but it was too late; Felicity Quirke could never be stopped once her ball started rolling!
The boy's acerbic demeanor continued its attempts to prickle and annoy the teenager, but it was like her infinite stores of positive energy nullified the advances of his downer mood the moment he insisted that nothing was the matter. "Well, um... uhh... hmm..." Felicity hummed some more, and some more, and continued doing so. "Hrrrrmmm..."
When Mona, the older kid's Skitty, began skirting around her legs in a sycophantic attempt to garner and curry attention for herself, Felicity's expression turned five shades redder than it already was. "HHRRRRMMMM..." It was mostly a response to her irresistibly adorable face; the pink tints were entirely accessory. But also because she was actively trying to be funny, mostly for her own amusement.
After a rather strangely long period of contemplative humming, Felicity just shrugged her shoulders upward abruptly, causing Breadstick the Slowpoke to jiggle like a fluffed pillow behind her scrawny arms. "Okay!" The dopey Pokémon merely stares off into space, completely absorbed in his own state of inner Zen.
Well, that was gratuitous.
"I appreciate the offer, but I was actually wondering where you found her? I've looked all over Hoenn and never saw a single one that somebody hadn't captured yet!" In her own way, Felicity was politely declining to acquiesce to the other person's permission to pick Mona up; but to satisfy the Skitty's desire for hugs, the youngster stooped to her knees and loosened her grasp on Breadstick enough to allow the feline Pokémon space for a big group hug – this pudgy pink porker is a great pillow! The Slowpoke is also pretty comfy, too!
If anything, it proved a point to Noel: she really didn't have an attention span.
Put simply, she couldn't afford one of those—
—And she tried, believe it! Like, they were 15,000 at the Department Store; Felicity wasn't some fancy person like, say, a lawyer or whatever! Where the heck was she gonna get that kind of hot fresh money!?

Noel scoffs in disbelief as the girl sings his hair's praises. " Um. Thanks, I guess." If she likes it so much, she should meet his sister. His hair might be pretty, but his sister's is downright ethereal. It glimmers iridescent like a rainbow reflected upon a pane of glass, turning heads on the street as she passes by. Noel used to complain that she took all the good genes for herself, but he never faulted her for it. No one could. He doesn't want to think about his sister right now. The girl takes a ludicrously long time to consider his offer, her face reddening to the point where he thinks her head might explode. He's almost disappointed when instead she opts to sweep her Slowpoke and then Mona into an uncomfortable-looking hug. Mona, however, seems rather pleased with her situation, somehow purring louder despite that her is squished into the Slowpoke's bulk. Noel feels like he's been betrayed somehow. The girl asks where he found Mona. " I didn't find her. She's the family pet. Was, until I left home." He refuses to elaborate. " My parents got her from a breeder, so that's kind of your best bet." Though Skitties aren't quite uncommon, they're certainly popular. Something occurs to Noel as turns away from the ocean, toward the trees deeper inland. " Actually, I think wild Skitties live in holes in trees. In forests." He gestures for the girl to follow his line of sight. " Like that one over here." Now go catch your own Skitty, Noel intends to say so he can finally get the girl off his back. But suddenly he's conscious again of the sea, the enormity of it just behind him, and he realizes that he would really rather be over there than over here. Noel throws his hands into the air. " You know what? I'll even help you look for one, like, right now. Why not. Let's go." If there's anything he needs right now, it's a mindless distraction. A Skitty-hunting expedition would fit the bill. TAG: Felicity Quirke NOTES: possibly. just a little. who knows though.

tag notes she's like a piece of dried gum: hard to get out of your hair, lmfao! | Oh, she came from a Breeder farm? Felicity tilts her head inquisitively, having never enlisted the services of a Pokémon caretaker before. She figured that there was probably an element of appeal to having a Pokémon hatched for you instead of doing all the hard work and finding one in the wild to capture. Either that, or the other boy came from rich parents, ergo had the means to afford such a privilege, Mona's status as the 'family pet' aside.
But the girl with bobbed hair instantly lights up like an overenthusiastic Christmas tree on Halloween upon being told that Skitties frequently made their homes in little tree hollows. "Oh, that's a good idea! Thank you bunches! Why didn't I think of that before?" The question was rhetorical, but Felicity had a mind to anticipate another blasé comment from her less-amiable counterpart. "Looks like we're tree-climbing today, Breadstick!"
"Poke." The porky pink Pokémon retorts with trademark exuberance, wiggling in his Trainer's arms to get the rest of his body more comfortable.
Just as Felicity was about to turn the other way to put exclusive focus on the search for a new Skitty, she is caught off guard by the boy's rather spontaneous offer to throw in a helping hand. And though she passionately loved the idea of a two-person adventure, the girl could tell when somebody wasn't entirely on board with themselves.
He must have had a lot on his mind if he's that quick to humor a total stranger, Felicity wondered. For as much of a ditzy space case as she was, the youngster was not entirely clueless of other peoples' feelings.
"A-Are you sure? I mean, you don't have to if you don't wanna!" Felicity asked a little more hesitantly this time around, trying her best to demonstrate sympathy for the boy's position yet unsure of how to properly show it. "Plus, it'll probably take, like, all day!" Spoken by any other teenager and it would have been just hyperbole, but this was not so in the case of one Felicity Quirke.

"Looks like we're tree-climbing today, Breadstick!"Breadstick is an incredibly stupid name for a Pokemon, and it deeply shames him that he had to stifle a laugh at the sound of it. He looks away. "A-Are you sure? I mean, you don't have to if you don't wanna!"" I want to," Noel says curtly, gesturing for Mona to return to his side. She trots over and begins to climb up his leg with expert ease. " Ow. Arceus, watch those claws," he mutters to his Skitty as she wriggles her way onto his shoulders, though there isn't any bite to his voice. " You'd be invincible if you knew Scratch."Once Mona is curled comfortably around the nape of his neck, Noel turns his attention back to the girl. " Honestly," he says with absolutely no intention of being honest, " I just don't have anything better to do right now. If it can kill some time, anything's fine." "Plus, it'll probably take, like, all day!"" I—hold on." Noel pinches the bridge of his nose, already kind of regretting his decision. " You're planning for this to take up the whole day? Do your parents even know you're here?" Speaking of which, he wonders how his own parents are doing. They're probably going about their usual business, patiently waiting for him to come back home with his tail between his legs. Well, they're going to be waiting for a long, long time. " I'll leave after, like, half an hour or something." On that note, he turns on his heel and heads for the forest further inland. The more distance he puts between him and the ocean, the better. TAG: Felicity Quirke NOTES: he's just gonna complain the whole time

tag notes feel free to physically attack her if you must, lmao | 'Honestly. I just don't have anything better to do right now. If it can kill some time, anything's fine.' Felicity may have been young and perpetually full of joy, but she was far from being unworldly; the boy was clearly trying to placate her effervescence, or just direct it somewhere else.
That would prove be his undoing. "Well, if you say so! Let's go, Breadstick!" Felicity cheerfully exclaimed with a peppy bounce – until the other person bemoaned her earlier insinuations of an all-day excursion for Skitties, attempting to weaponize the opinions of her own parents against the youngster to no effect.
Well, someone was a sourpuss. But this failed to affect Felicity's spirits in any meaningful way, which she would prove with her own admissions, "Dad's at the Lilycove Museum with my brothers! I told 'em I'd be visiting the Safari Zone, buuuut..." She rolls her eyes playfully, looking back down at her sleepy Slowpoke with a big, sunny smile. "I was hoping I could have Breadstick fish me up a Magikarp today!"
Then she took a loving glance at Mona, the other child's Skitty, and continued on, "But now that I met you, things are different! Today's gonna be the day I take home forty Skitties!" That was purely exaggeration on her end, something Mr. Frowny Face over there obviously had difficulties realizing, based on his verbal decision to leave half an hour into the search.
Whistling a chipper tune, Felicity Quirke turns on her heels and makes for the trees lining the outskirts of Route 121, still intent on visiting the Safari Zone to observe and possibly capture more Pokémon, but now freakishly determined to climb the nearest birch and make a new, pink friend!
"𝅘𝅥𝅮 I'm gonna catch some 'mons, only got Poké Balls in my pocket~! 𝅘𝅥𝅮" It was certainly going to be a long day, but not in Felicity's case. She had all the time in the world to have fun! Isn't that what makes being a Trainer the best thing, like, ever?
